
Shirley F.B. Carter
Born in Boston during the Great Depression, Dr. Shirley F B Carter, a third-generation Black Yankee, has resided in Worcester, Massachusetts many years. From an early age, she kept a journal, recording her days and times and observing her history and experiences.
Dr. Carter worked as a registered nurse for many years and was one of the first two colored nurses to graduate from Worcester City Hospital School of nursing in 1952, her sister Audrey, was the other. Dr. Carter also taught health education at Worcester East Middle School and Springfield College. She earned degrees from Assumption College and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
She raised two daughters, Laura and Mia, now adults, and is grandmother to Ari, Liam, and Jascha and great grandmother to Emme and Frances. She is a lifelong parishioner of Saint Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Worcester and a member of the choir.
Dr. Carter is working on her next book, Rum Runner.
